Thillaiaadi Valliammai


Thillaiaadi Valliammai (22 February 1898 - 22 February 1914) was a South African Tamil woman who worked with Mahatma Gandhi in his early years when he toned his nonviolent methods in South Africa fighting its apartheid regime. Valliammai joined Gandhi's movement at the age of 16 and died soon thereafter during the anti-apartheid agitation. Gandhi later said that it was her sacrifice that increased his resolve to fight for Indian independence. In 1913, Valliammai took part in Gandhi's fight for abolition of the Indian Poll Tax. Although she was imprisoned by the British colonial government and later allowed to be released due to her illness, Vallimmai refused to do so until after the abolition of the Tax in 1914. Thillaiaadi Valliammai Memorial Hall including a public library was instituted in 1971 on a 2452 sq.m land by the Indian Government in the village of Thillaiaadi in Nagapattinam, India.The Library also functioning regularly in this memorial. Situated in Thillayadi Valliammai Village at Tharangambadi Taulk. Valliammai had never been to India. She was born in Johannesburg, South Africa to R. Munusamy Mudaliar, a trader and owner of a confectionery shop, and his wife Janaki. Since Janaki is believed lo have hailed from Thillaiaadi village in India, her daughter Valliammai came to be popularly called Thillaiaadi Valliammai. Other buildings in her name include Thillaiaadi Valliammai Nagar and the Thillaiaadi Valliammai High School in Vennanthur.

A R Rahman wins Golden Globe award


MUMBAI-BASED DRAMA Slumdog Millionaire has won four Golden Globes including best original score motion picture for AR Rahman.

At a glittering ceremony in Los Angeles, Rahman bagged the Golden Globe award for the best original music score for Slumdog Millionaire, for his song ‘Jai Ho’, penned by lyricist Gulzar.

Accepting the honor, Rahman said, “Unbelievable…! I thought, I would not win, so anyways thanks to the almighty god for bringing me here.”

Slumdog Millionaire also won Golden Globe for best motion picture-drama, best director motion picture award for Danny Boyle and best screenplay motion picture for Simon Beaufoy.

The success of Slumdog Millionaire, which has received numerous critical awards, was all the more potent since it had originally struggled to find a distributor in the US.

As per screenwriter Simon Beaufoy, they really weren’t expecting to be here in America at all at one time, so it’s just amazing to be here.

However, Indian music maestro Rahman created history by winning the Golden Globe awardAfter nearly decades of work in Bollywood, the award brings the much-deserved international recognition to the legendary music director from down South.

Boyle’s feel-good film depicts the moving story of a slum dweller Jamal, played by young Dev Patel, who goes to win USD 20 million on Indian reality show ‘who wants to be a millionaire’ in a bid to win his love back.

Story of this film is based on Mumbai underdog’s rags-to-riches run had got unprecedented critical acclaims and had earned four nominations, including the best picture-drama, best director, best screenplay and best original music score. Interestingly, this film turns nomination into triumph as well.

This film is based on a novel by Indian diplomat Vikas Swaroop. The film also had Indian stars Anil Kapoor and Irfan Khan in pivotal roles.

The film has been shot at various locations in Mumbai including Victoria Terminus railway station, which was targeted by terrorists on November 26, last year.
